Elaine

Voice

Elaine is the storyteller of The Swing Gitan ensemble, using her voice to engage audiences and bring each song to life while complementing the group’s melodies and instrumental solos. Although relatively new to both Gypsy Jazz and live performance, she has quickly discovered a true passion for the genre. One of the things Elaine loves most about The Swing Gitan is the band’s ability to interpret well-loved songs in their own distinctive style.

Adam

Rhythm guitar (la pompe)

Adam is the founder of The Swing Gitan (although we don't tell him that as it makes his head too big). Having played guitar since he was a teenager (and he's now ancient), he enjoys both banging out some jazz chords and whizzing around his instrument with virtuoso solos. Watch out for his 'red cards' (other songs mashed into solos that really shouldn't be), and how many rounds he has to buy at the bar for always playing the last note in any song.

Mel

Violin

Having played classical violin her whole adult life, a few gins was all it took for Adam to convince her to try a bit of jazz improv one evening. Mel loves the freedom and relaxed nature of Gypsy Jazz, and enjoys being part of a group with such lovely musicians. She has also been nominated for a 2026 Pride of Reading Award.

Pete

Double bass

Pete looks after the low notes for The Swing Gitan and brings the walking basslines that keep our songs moving.

Damo

Rhythm guitar (la pompe)

After more than 20 years of playing guitar, he’s happiest holding down the rhythm, sneaking in the occasional fancy chord, and helping knock the band’s arrangements into shape. If there’s a new tune to figure out, he’ll usually have a few ideas about what everyone else should be playing too.

Emma

Violin

After years of childhood rebellion, Emma finally discovered the joys of playing the violin as an adult. She particularly loves improvising with other musicians.
